TOP Protecting Your Rights : Songs in the Public Domain : Useful Music Organizations : Useful Music Sites Songs in the Public Domain Normally we only play original material - but here is a useful link for any artist who wants to check out what songs are currently in the public domain, and therefore, alright for us to play. pdinfo.com PROTECTING YOUR RIGHTS You are an indie artist and you are writing music. You should join SOCAN Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada. You can join free if you do so over the internet. Visit SOCAN at http://www.socan.ca/ where you can both join and find out more information. If you have a CD, you will need to send 2 copies to Library and Archives Canada, which is the Federal body which takes care of Legal Deposit of Canadian Recordings. Read the fine print, however, since this a;so gives them a lot of personal information you may not wish to give them! You can contact this body at their website http://collectionscanada.ca To protect your own mechanical rights, or to research the mechanical rights for any cover material you may wish to add to your CD, you will need to be a member of CMRRA. The Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency Ltd. (CMRRA) is a non-profit music licensing agency, which represents the vast majority of music copyright owners (usually called music publishers) doing business in Canada. USEFUL MUSIC ORGANIZATIONS There are many music organizations which can be useful to the Indie songwriter, a few of these include NSAI Nashville Songwriters Association International, CCMA The Country Music Association, SAC Songwriters Association of Canada. CIRPA Canadian Independent Record Production Association. CIRPA. CIRPA Canadian Independent Record Production Association. You can visit their website to get more information about this helpful organization at http://www.cirpa.ca/ There are many sites where artists can set up a profile, photos and music for free or for a small fee. Some of the best free ones that we know of include WWSWA, SoundClick , NumberOneMusic, SongRamp LULU, and iSound. Many sites will tell you that they will sell your CD. They usually require a "set-up" fee which varies depending upon the site. Our experience is that the best, largest and most useful one is CDBaby. CDBaby requires a $35.00 USD set-up fee, and five CDs. They also offer you the opportunity to sell MP3s - that is an additional $35.00 USD. CDBaby is the largest online indie CD reseller/distributor. They are reliable and honest. (They don't pay us a commission - LOL) CDBaby | |||||||||
