About Candi McNeil, Founder-owner of IndieTalent.ca
Candi is the Mrs. Carlson of IndieTalent.ca, the owner and the GM.

Candi McNeil was born in the UK and emigrated to Australia with her parents at a young age. She was always interested in singing and bands and when she came to Canada she learned to play the bass and joined many groups and travelled round Western Canada.

First in Calgary and then Victoria and then Toronto. Candi has always played country and pop style and enjoys it all.
She joined the band Denam and Lace in 1991 and had tremendous fun and met many beautiful people, but in 1995 decided to give music a break and try something new. During that time off she played flute in community bands and sang with some 40 era type swing bands.

And also during that time, she and husband Jim started Canclone Services,
a CD replication company (CD replication and more). In 2006, Candi decided that it would be a great idea to have an internet broadcast station so she could play the music of the artists whose CD's Canclone replicated. Candi is now the owner and General Manager of IndieTalent.ca

Will Cowan (City Coin Laundry)

There was a "sign" that stood above an old shop that seemed to make sense to me one night when I was filled with all sorts of stimulants in the drab town of Peterborough. I threw myself from a cab and looked up at the words, "city coin laundry".

This sad dirty old Laundromat that I had used for years during school had only really interested me that night. I had been looking for a band name for a while and tried everything to come up with it (hence the stimulants!).

So, I stared at the words and tried to soak it all into my world as it was for the time being. For some reason, it just stared to make sense to me.

Soon enough I ended up at my apartment writing the name down everywhere. This exercise ended with me waking up to every possible font and colour imaginable performed on many surfaces within my living quarters.

It took a while to really enjoy the name and feel confident about it in comparison to the music. Really, it didn't matter if the music sounded like the name or vice versa.

Some people even asked if it was some sort of comment on the world or something! I made some bullshit remark once about it being a metaphor or oxymoron that implied the financial state of our government in comparison to laundry and the city state.

In the end, it was just a sign that made sense one night when I wanted it to. I guess if I had to name a few influences they would be the Verve, Elliott Smith, Mojave 3,Bright eyes, Brian Eno,Trashcan Sinatras, and Damien Rice to name a few.

Some of these sounds and compositions are fluent throughout my work, while some were merely my inspiration for writing anything at all.
Will Cowan

You could say that Wool Gathering is a bold marriage of electronic orchestration, and acoustic authenticity. I suppose, in general, city coin laundry has always taken the basis of grass root song writing and applied it towards a modern sounds cape.

Although Wool Gathering is a solo recording, city coin laundry has always consisted of two permanent members; Marco Longo and myself have been playing together since 2003. We met while studying music at University; he is one of the most amazing drummers I have ever played with. His sense of timing, rhythm, and composition always brings something special to our songs.

Personally, I have been playing music for 16 years, on top of being the primary song writer, guitar player, and lead vocalist; I have also spent the last 3 years perfecting my recording skills, (Wool Gathering is a home recorded project.) Wool Gathering was also mastered by Peter Letros of Wreckhouse and Sony.

Ashwyn Smyth

This is another "Their loss - our gain" story.  Ashwyn was hosting a blues show in the UK and he was let go - because he DARED to voice an opinion that ran counter to management's view (Fancy that?).

Of course, as soon as we found out, we invited Ashwyn to run his show from IndieTalent, and that's what he's going to do.  His show "Digital Blues" will air once a month, and we expect to launch this in the near future, actually as soon as Ashwyn sends us a show!

"
I’m Ashwyn Smyth and I am delighted to be presenting Digital Blues here on IndieTalent.ca.
It was in my teens that I developed a love for many genres of music and at boarding school sang in small and large choirs (appearing on television several times), fronting a pop group with school mates and taking the lead female role in Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance at age 13 – I am told that I made a very pretty girl!!!

It was during this time that I first discovered the Blues, and unearthed, thanks to the likes of the Rolling Stones and others, the great heritage of music that there was with artists like Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley and Snooks Eaglin (who sadly died recently) to name but a few.

In the late 60s and early 70s I ran a very successful mobile disco but the need to pay bills, I married for the first time in 1976, forced me into a ‘respectable’ career working in the City of London as an insurance broker, something which I continued to do until retiring in June 2008 by which time I had become a director with one of the top ten UK insurance brokers..

I continued to enjoy a wide range of music and was involved with a couple of small choirs as well as doing the occasional disco for friends. In 1988 I joined Orsett Hospital Radio in Essex as a presenter and after a couple of years, I became the station’s PR officer as well as presenting two shows per week, one featuring classical music and one general requests from the patients and staff.

In the mid 90’s I joined MayflowerFM,  a community radio group based in Billericay, Essex and became their press officer as well as presenting various shows including a speech based magazine show, a rock programme and various others.

I subsequently joined  another community radio group based in Brentwood, Essex (which shall remain nameless) and after presenting various shows for them, in 2001 when the station started a full time internet service, I created Digital Blues, a programme that featured ‘blues ancient and modern’ and specialised in featuring music from local bands and artists, mining the deep vein of the Thames Delta Blues that was championed by the likes of Dr Feelgood, Howling Wilf (now better known as James Hunter!) and Mickey Jupp.

To promote Digital Blues and raise awareness of the radio shows, I started an e-mail newsletter which included details of local gigs and band news and, in a natural progression, set up the Digital Blues website (www.digitalblues.co.uk) which has become a very popular blues resource and includes the most detailed guide to blues gigs in and around Essex.

Working with drummer Mike Hellier of the Cornwall based Movinmusic agency, we also created the Movinmusic Digital Blues Gig Guide which is probably the biggest UK blues gig guide on the internet.

Until June 2008, I was also the compere each week at the New Crawdaddy Blues Club, one of the most respected blues venues in the UK and had the honour of introducing many top UK and international artists. In association with the New Crawdaddy Blues Club, I promoted a number of one & two day blues festivals which raised thousands of pounds for charity. I was also involved in promoting various gigs, particularly at the historic and renowned Pam’s Bar, now the Seaxe Bar, at the Essex Arms in Brentwood.

Sadly, my involvement with (------------) came to a sudden end in June 2007 when, without notice, I was sacked by e-mail and the show was immediately removed from the schedule, all because I dared to hold and express an opinion that did not concur with that of the station’s MD! Freedom of the Press huh!

However, the Digital Blues website has continued to thrive and I continue to be a contributor to Blues Matters!, the UK’s biggest specialist Blues magazine and recipient of the Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award (Print Media) in 2007, writing reviews and conducting interviews as well as recording promotional shows for Blues Matters! online radio (www.bluesmatters.com) showcasing Blues Matters! recording artists. I also contribute, occasionally, to Blues in Britain, another top UK specialist magazine.

Upon retiring from the day job, Patricia, my wife, and I moved to rural France where we are now living in an old farm which we have been and continue to refurbish and renovate in the lush green countryside that is the Haute Vienne area of the Limousin.

We have a sheep, Benji, who helps keep the grass down and hope later this year to get him a mate! A puppy has also just arrived – thank goodness for tiled floors! - and we are also hoping to add some chickens and ducks in due course!

We also help a friend who is a sheep farmer and the first part of 2009 has seen us deep in mud &/or snow rescuing lambs abandoned by their mothers and bottle feeding them. You cannot say life is not varied!! You can read more about this new life at www.lamaisondubluesnumerique.com.

The Digital Blues shows on IndieTalent.ca will feature tracks from the best of the excellent UK Blues scene as well as fine artists from around the world. Digital Blues is proud to have given many bands and artists their first radio airing world-wide and regularly receives CDs from around Europe, Canada, the US, South America, Scandinavia and Australia. Over the years we have also been proud to feature world exclusive first airings of tracks from new CDs.

I look forward to your company on Digital Blues, the first show will be up and running just as soon as I can pull it all together and obtain the necessary releases!

A bientot! "

The Weezinator

The Weezinator is the show host and can often be found sharpening her teeth with a flick knife, or secretly spray-painting and tagging walls. Do NOT irritate the Weezinator since you may find yourself featured on WTF Radio.  Be very afraid.
